Driving Licence

It is essential that you have a provisional licence before you can drive on the road. If you do not have a provisional licence then you need to apply for one. An application form can be obtained free from any post office by asking for a form D1. You can find more information on licences and prices by visiting the DVLA web site. (DirectGov website)

When you receive your provisional licence you are able to start learning to drive. Initially you will be classified as a learner driver and will be required to pass a driving test to become a qualified driver.

You can start learning to drive whilst studying for the theory test, but you must first pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical test. You can take a 'mock theory' test at any time by visiting the Driving Standards Agency web site.

You may apply for your provisional licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
If you are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate, you are able to take driving lessons from the age of 16 and may apply for your licence up to three months before your 16th birthday.
